Why Your Dog “Knows” Commands at Home… But Ignores You in Public

(And how to fix it without yelling, repeating yourself 20 times, or losing your mind)

If you’ve ever said:

  • “He listens perfectly at home…”

  • “But the second we go outside it’s like I don’t exist.”

  • “He knows what I’m asking, he’s just being stubborn.”

You’re not alone — and you’re not failing.

This is one of the most common issues dog owners face, and the good news is it has a real explanation (and a real fix).

Let’s break it down.

Your dog isn’t being “bad” — they’re being distracted

Dogs don’t generalize commands the way humans do.

To us, “sit” means sit anywhere:

  • kitchen

  • front yard

  • park

  • Petsmart aisle

  • while a kid is screaming nearby

But to your dog, “sit” at home might mean:

✅ “Sit in the living room with zero distractions.”

Then you go outside and the environment becomes:

  • new smells

  • other dogs

  • people

  • birds

  • cars

  • wind

  • grass textures

In their brain, the command becomes blurry, and distractions become more rewarding than listening to you.

The real reason this happens: the 3 D’s

At TBK9 we train for what’s called the 3 D’s:

Distance

How far away can you be while your dog still listens?

Duration

How long can they hold the command?

Distractions

Can they obey when the world is exciting?

Most owners accidentally train only one version:close + short + quiet environment.

So the dog isn’t disobedient…They’re simply untrained for distractions.

How to fix it (step-by-step)

Here’s the exact method we recommend:

Step 1: Stop repeating commands

If you say “come” 6 times, your dog learns:

“Come doesn’t matter until they say it 6 times.”

Instead:

  • say the command once

  • if they don’t respond, calmly guide them into the correct response (or reset and try again)

Step 2: Make listening more rewarding than distractions

If the park is more exciting than you… your dog will choose the park.

So we change the value.

Use:

  • high-value treats (real chicken / beef / freeze dried treats)

  • praise

  • a toy reward

  • quick play session

Listening should become:✅ the fastest route to something awesome

Step 3: Train in levels (don’t jump from living room to park)

This is the BIG one.

Use this progression:

  1. Inside your home

  2. Backyard / driveway

  3. Front yard

  4. Quiet public area

  5. Busy public area

Train in short sessions (5–10 minutes).

Once your dog succeeds 80% of the time, level up.

The TBK9 Challenge: 7 Days to Better Listening

Try this simple plan:

Day 1–2: training indoors✅ Day 3–4: training outside at home✅ Day 5: quiet park (distance + focus work)✅ Day 6: busier area (but controlled)✅ Day 7: repeat your toughest environment and measure improvement

Even 7 days of focused work can change everything.

When you should get professional help

If your dog has:

  • leash reactivity

  • aggression issues

  • severe anxiety

  • unpredictable behavior around people/dogs

Please don’t “wait and hope” it gets better — these problems usually get worse without structure.

A trainer can:

  • identify triggers

  • build a calm foundation

  • teach you how to lead correctly

  • create a plan tailored to your dog
