Stop the Jumping: How to Fix a Dog That Jumps on Everyone

(Without Yelling or Pushing Them Off)

If your dog jumps on people the second they walk in the door — you’re not alone.

A lot of owners think jumping is:

  • excitement

  • love

  • “just being friendly”

But to your guests (and your clothes) it feels like:

  • scratches

  • muddy paw prints

  • getting tackled at the front door

The good news? Jumping is trainable, and fixing it doesn’t require yelling, kneeing your dog, or pushing them off 50 times.

Why dogs jump

Jumping happens for one reason:

It works.

Your dog jumps… and they get:

  • attention

  • eye contact

  • talking

  • petting

  • even being pushed off (yes — that’s still attention)

To your dog, that’s a reward.

So the jumping becomes a habit.

The biggest mistake owners make

Most people train jumping like this:

Dog jumps → owner says “NO” → pushes them off → dog jumps again → owner repeats.

Problem is… your dog just learned this:

Jumping = guaranteed interaction.

Even negative attention is still attention.

The TBK9 rule: “No paws, no attention.”

This is the key:

Feet on the floor = attentionFeet off the floor = zero attention

No talking.No touching.No eye contact.

Your dog has to learn that calm behavior unlocks everything they want.

How to fix jumping (Step-by-Step)

✅ Step 1: Teach a replacement behavior

Jumping isn’t the real issue — it’s a missing skill.

Instead of jumping, we teach:

  • Sitor

  • Place (go to a bed/mat)

These commands give your dog a clear job.

✅ Step 2: Practice “door manners”

This is the training routine we use at TBK9:

  1. Put your dog on leash

  2. Have someone knock or walk in

  3. The moment your dog tries to jump:

    • guide them down calmly

    • no words, no correction spam

  4. The second they’re calm:

    • reward + praise

    • let them greet

They learn fast: calm = greeting.

✅ Step 3: Stop rewarding jumping accidentally

This is HUGE.

If your dog jumps and you:

  • pet them

  • talk to them

  • laugh

  • push them down

You’re still rewarding it.

Instead do this:

The “Turn Away Method”

When your dog jumps:✅ turn your body sideways✅ arms folded✅ ignore completely✅ wait for feet to touch ground✅ reward instantly

You’re teaching:

“Jumping turns people off. Calm brings them back.”

What about dogs that jump HARD?

Some dogs go full kangaroo mode 😅

For those cases, we recommend a structured solution:

✅ “Place” Command Training

Dog learns:

  • when the door opens → go to place

  • stay there until released

This is the best method for:

  • large dogs

  • kids in the home

  • guests who don’t like dogs

  • dogs that jump out of excitement

It creates structure instead of chaos.

How long does it take to fix?

Most dogs improve within 7–14 days if the owner is consistent.

But consistency is everything.

If you allow jumping sometimes (“only when I get home”) then your dog learns:

“Jumping is worth trying because sometimes it works.”
